LA Galaxy have confirmed the signing of
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard revealed last Friday that he would be
ending his 26-year association with Liverpool at
the end of this season to move to MLS.
And the Galaxy announced on Thursday that the
former England skipper will join them on an
undisclosed contract in July as a Designated
Player, subject to international clearance.
"I'm very excited to begin the next chapter of my
career in the United States with LA Galaxy," said
Gerrard, 34, in a statement published on Galaxy's
official website.
"The Galaxy are the most successful club in
Major League Soccer history and I am looking
forward to competing for more championships in
the years to come.
"My discussions with [head coach and general
manager] Bruce Arena and [president] Chris
Klein were extremely positive and the future of
the team is very bright.
"I am committed to helping the LA Galaxy
compete for trophies and to having an impact in
Los Angeles and I will give my all for the club.
"In the meantime, I will continue to give
everything for Liverpool for the remainder of this
season before joining up with the Galaxy."
Arena, meanwhile, is thrilled by the prospect of
working with Gerrard.
"We're very pleased to acquire a player of
Steven's calibre, experience and character," he
commented.
"He is one of the most decorated players in the
world and will join our team with a wealth of
success playing at the highest level of the sport.
"Steven will be an excellent example to our
young players and we're excited to add him and
his leadership to an already talented roster."
Gerrard - who retired from international football
following last year's World Cup after winning 114
caps - has enjoyed a glittering career at
Liverpool, making nearly 700 first-team
appearances and leading the club to UEFA
Champions League glory in 2005.
He is also Liverpool's top scorer this season,
and netted both goals in their 2-1 FA Cup victory
over AFC Wimbledon on Monday.
