TOP TWO CHELSEA, SOUTHAMPTON WIN AGAIN

Chelsea a deserved
2-1 comeback win at
Liverpool on Saturday
as they stretched their
unbeaten Premier
League run to 11
matches from the
start of the season.


Chelsea stayed four points clear at the top from
Southampton, who won 2-0 at home to Leicester
City after Shane Long came on as a 67th-minute
substitute and scored with a left-foot shot on 75
minutes and a right-foot effort five minutes later.


Chelsea have 29 points, Southampton 25 with
champions Manchester City, who are third on 20
points, playing at Queens Park Rangers in a 1730
GMT kickoff.


Elsewhere goals were in short supply as
Manchester United beat Crystal Palace 1-0 with a
67th-minute effort from substitute Juan Mata, while
Burnley beat Hull City 1-0 for their first league win
of the season thanks to Ashley Barnes's 50th-
minute header.


West Ham United drew 0-0 at Upton Park with
Aston Villa, whose run of six successive defeats
came to an end.


The most exciting match of the afternoon came at
Anfield where Emre Can scored his first goal for
Liverpool with a long-range shot after nine minutes
that took a deflection off Gary Cahill's shoulder
leaving Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois stranded.


Cahill pulled Chelsea level after 14 minutes –
awarded after the Goal Decision System proved the
ball had crossed the line even though his shot was
smothered by Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet.

Costa settled the points in the 67th minute when he
put Chelsea ahead with a low, powerful drive, but
Liverpoolthought they should have had a penalty in
the 88th minute when Cahill appeared to handle a
Steven Gerrard shot.


Their strong claims were denied though and they
lost for the third time in a week.

SUAREZ INSPIRES BARÇA REVIVAL AT ALMERIA

Suarez inspired
Barcelona to come
from behind and snap
a two-game losing
streak in La Liga with
a 2-1 win at Almeria
on Saturday.


Suarez had started the game on the bench
alongside Neymar as Barca boss Luis Enrique made
five changes from the side that defeated Ajax 2-0 in
midweek.


However, both men were called into action at
halftime after Thievy Bifouma had fired Almeria into
the lead eight minutes before the break.


Suarez squared for Neymar to level the scores 18
minutes from time and his cross then teed up Jordi
Alba to seal the three points nine minutes later.


Victory takes Barca a point ahead of Real Madrid at
the top of La Liga, but Los Blancos can reclaim top
spot when they host Rayo Vallecano later on
Saturday.


Enrique's decision to make a host of changes
handed Pedro Rodriguez and Munir El Haddadi a
start alongside Lionel Messi in attack.


But they did little to justify their selection, although
Munir did force Ruben Martinez into a low save
after the Almeria 'keeper had blocked Messi's effort
from close range.


Martinez had to be at his best to stop Barca taking
the lead just before the half hour mark as he
scrambled to keep out Ivan Rakitic's downward
header and from the rebound Messi nodded onto
the crossbar.


However, the visitors were caught out eight
minutes before halftime as Messi lost possession
deep inside the Almeria half and with one pass
Barca were undone as Jonathan Soriano released
Thievy and he raced past Bartra before calmly
slotting past Bravo.


Enrique had seen enough in the first 45 minutes and
swiftly introduced Suarez and Neymar for Munir
and Pedro at the break.


It took 15 minutes for the substitutes to make an
impact as Suarez acrobatically volleyed against the
bar at the back post from a corner.


Suarez was the creator when Barca did eventually
level as he turned his marker just inside the area
and squared for Neymar to turn the ball home via a
deflection off Ximo Navarro.


The Uruguayan was inches away from his first
Barca goal moments later as he spun and sent a
low shot just beyond Martinez's far post.


Suarez then teed up Messi to sent another looping
header off the crossbar as the pressure from the
Catalans continued.


And they found the winner eight minutes from the
end when after another burst from Suarez down the
right he picked out the late arriving Alba from left-
back to bundle home his first goal of the season.


Messi's quest to become the joint top goalscorer in
La Liga history was frustrated once more by
Martinez in stoppage time, but Barca saw the game
out to return to winning ways after back-to-back

Barca suffered back-to-back La Liga defeats and
although they beat Ajax 2-0 on Wednesday to book
a place in the last 16, their football was far from
fluid, especially in the first half.


Messi came to the rescue with a double that saw
him draw level with Raul on 71 goals at the top of
the Champions League all-time scoring charts.


Cristiano Ronaldo is one adrift having missed out on
the chance to add to his tally in Real Madrid's 1-0
win over Liverpool on Tuesday.


"I am happy for Leo, for the work he does for the
team and because he is the number one, the best,"
midfielder Xavi told reporters.


Barca have nine points from four games in Group F
and are a point off leaders Paris St Germain, who
beat them in France.


"In the first half, they (Ajax) were in control but after
that we played better and got three points which will
give us confidence.


"We need to keep going and winning matches. We
needed to win this game and we played some good
football at times. We also had some difficult
moments but we were playing away and in the
Champions League.


"Ajax played pressed high up the pitch and it is
normal that it would not be easy but the result is a

INQUISITION


Barca followed up a defeat in the El Clasico against
Real Madrid with a home loss at the hands of Celta
Vigo which knocked the Catalans off top spot in La
Liga and they are now down in fourth, on 22 points
from ten games.


The defeats led to an inquisition over Luis Enrique's
tactics with the coach having chopped and changed
his side constantly and there is also talk of dressing
room unrest.


In midfield, Barca began the season with Ivan
Rakitic as the focal point and Xavi as little more
than a bit-part player but now the veteran has
reasserted his influence.


His control in midfield during the second half
against Ajax coincided with Barca's best play.


Most questions have been asked about the defence
though, where both fullbacks Dani Alves and Jordi
Alba have been off-form.


Luis Enrique surprisingly left out Alba for the El
Clasico game and instead started Jeremy Mathieu,
who was untried in that position for Barca.


In central defence, the debate has focused on
Gerard Pique who was left out of the squad against
Celta and was an unused substitute in Amsterdam.


"The style is the same now as it was before. After a
defeat you don't change your style, you just have to
keep going," Xavi added.


"The style has been the same all the time that Luis
Enrique has been in charge.
"It is down to the coach who plays.

Pique is very
important and he will be all season. The coach has
decided to play others and we are all working to
start the games. Gerard is working hard and he will

MYSTERIOUS BIRD TURNS INTO A WOMAN IN BROAD DAY-LIGHT.

This may seem like a scene in a movie but
eyewitnesses swear that a mysterious bird fell to
the ground in Lagos and turned into an old woman.


Wonders, they say, would never end!


That summarises the look of shock that permeated
resident and passersby at the Oshodi area of
Lagos when an alleged mysterious bird suddenly
crash-landed to the ground and turned into an old
woman.


The bird-turned woman, according to
eyewitnesses, looked quite haggard and gaunt and
as people gathered, confessed that she was on
her way to see her child whose wife just put to
bed when she collided with an electric wire and
fell to the ground and slowly changed into an old
woman with peeled skin as if she had been
scalded by fire.


A witness, who uses the twitter handle
@davidTheGEAR, took time to tweet the
happenings and managed to get close to hear the
woman confessing how she killed her husband
through witchcraft.


Trust Lagosians, the incident turned into quite a
spectacle as many people pushed and huffed to
take pictures of the woman with their phones. The
stampede was said to have caused serious traffic
jam before security operatives managed to whisk
the old bird-woman away.
